The AuthorWhen I was growing up (I'm an old guy), everybody had a tv antenna on their roof or in the attic or at least a pair of rabbit ears sitting on top of the tv . There wasn't any other way. TV antennas disappeared for a while, but now they're back, and much improved. The new antennas are much smaller, easier to handle, and more efficient than the old ones.

Take a look at these new TV Antennas -

Here are some important points -

1. All local network TV stations still broadcast OTA (over the air) just like they always have. In other words if you live anywhere near a city (within 20 miles or so), a simple TV antenna, even a homemade one should bring in ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, PBS and any local independent stations.

2. If you have an HD (high definition) television set, and the TV stations are broadcasting in HD, then the picture you get with an antenna will be in HD. You don't need cable or satellite to get HDTV. Your TV antenna will do the job just fine. Try it and see.

3. Almost all (and I mean 98%) of TV broadcasts are now digital and UHF (ultra high frequency). So what does this mean to you? Well for starters it means that the TV picture you will get is much sharper than it was in the old days. It also means that the antenna used to receive the signal does not need to be nearly as big and ungainly as the old ones were.

4. Almost all of the antennas recommended on this site are UHF only, but if there are any TV stations in your area that are still broadcasting a VHF signal, here is an antenna that is rated highly for both VHF and UHF broadcasts.

5. This is very important. If you have an older TV set that does not have a digital tuner you will need to get a digital converter box so that the new digital TV signals will work and you can watch free TV.

Here are some digital converters to consider:

The Best HDTV Antennas

Watch TV without cable and save 80 bucks a month or more. Antenna TV is free, easy as pie, and works like a charm.

DB2 AntennaClick Here for the best price on a 5 star HDTV antenna. This is the Eagle Aspen antenna. It's very inexpensive and has excellent reviews.

And here's something new I foundSuperSonic indoor antenna
It's the very inexpensive SuperSonic HDTV Digital Indoor Antenna, an indoor TV Antenna that's perfect for apartments and condos, or for anyone who doesn't want to bother with an outdoor antenna. It's new and has about 40 80 reviews, and most are very positive. Definitely worth considering.

The only complaint buyers seem to have about this antenna is that the attached coaxial cable is too short (3 feet) so if you buy this antenna you should also buy a Cable Extension Adaptor and a coaxial cable extension

Clearstream 4 Antenna***  Long Range Antenna ***
For people who live a long way from the transmission towers, 40 miles or more, here's an antenna that will do the job for you. The Clearstream 4 from Antennas Direct has over 300 positive reviews.

Here's a list of the best selling TV Antennas from Amazon.com.
The list is updated every hour.

The AuthorI first got excited about TV antennas when I stumbled across a guide that showed how to make an HDTV antenna out of old wire coat hangers. It sounded interesting and looked easy so I made one, and I was totally amazed at how well it worked. The picture was every bit as good as what I was getting with cable. So I made another one for my other TV, then I called the cable company and canceled. I don't miss it a bit.

When I decided to put up this website, I realized that there are lots of people who aren't into the "do it yourself" scene, so I found what I think are the best digital TV antenna deals available, and here we are.

  • So what's different about these new TV antennas ?
  • They're much smaller than TV antennas used to be.
  • They're inexpensive.
  • They're sturdy and well made.
  • Thousands of people already own these antennas.
  • Bottom line – they do exactly what they're supposed to do,
    and they do it well.

DB2e AntennaLet's look at the New DB2e, which is the smallest and least expensive of the new offerings from Antennas Direct. If you're anywhere near a large metropolitan area (up to 20 miles), this antenna should be all you'll need. Be sure to read the reviews.

Here are some pictures of an attic installation.

If you think that you are too far from the transmission towers, you can double the antenna size (with a DB4e) or even quadruple it (with a DB8) very easily.

TV antennas are for:

  • People who are tired of paying through the nose
    for cable or satellite TV.
  • People who want good HDTV reception for free.
  • People who like to be independent.

DB type antennas are fairly forgiving about direction, but you'll get the best results if your antenna is aimed toward the transmission towers. Go to antennaweb.org and fill in the information they ask for. They only ask for your address so they can give you an exact compass direction to your house. The site will produce a report giving you the compass direction of each transmission tower in your area.

Note that these antennas don't come with masts or poles for mounting. You can purchase these separately or you can use an aluminum, wood, or PVC pole or an existing antenna mast.

So is there a downside to all this? Well, you won't get as many channels as with cable, but it's a whole lot cheaper. The choice is yours.

Now just sit back and enjoy endless FREE TV!
